Kyle Lucas Blog: If I Can Get A Deal, You Can To!
By Stuart Hallick • January 13, 2009
Greetings & Salutations! This is my first official blog in the wonderful HHK world!
Stu and Ryan approached me to do this guest blog thingy and I jumped at the idea. I blog a lot on my site, always doing videos and I constantly update my myspace music account. So I figured one more thing, ugh, why the fuck not…
For those out there who have no idea who I am…ques Jay-Z “P.S.A” (Allow me TO RE-Introduce myself!) My name is Kyle Lucas. I am an emcee. Some may know me from my mixtapes appearances others may know me from my band Vonnegutt.
Recently my band signed a deal with Big Boi (of Outkast’s) Purple Ribbon Records and we are currently working on our debut album and setting up our debut national tour.
So where should I start? Currently it is 3:08 a.m. here in wonderful Marietta, GA. I am winding down with a 40 oz and some _____ (insert painkiller here) and bumping some Coheed & Cambria (my favorite band).
Today was a dope day; I kinda just relaxed and wrote a song while watching Pineapple Express. A kid I grew up with and went to high school is in that movie, Adam what up!?!? I also had band practice today. We are gearing up for a huge show with our friends in the band The Status. Ben Grant from The Status was featured on my latest mixtape Kyle Lucas is Still My Favorite.
But instead of just ramble on about my day I’m going to take this time to answer a question a fan sent me on my myspace. Kevin said “How does it feel finally being a signed emcee and what advice can you give to up and coming emcees?”
I thought this would be a dope question to answer because I know the HHK community is full of rappers.
Well first off to be 100% honest…it feels fucking incredible! Haha I mean, I still can’t believe it. There are times when I still get caught off guard in the studio and realize that I’m making music with Big Boi and am completely stunned. I am really lucky enough to be in such a talented band and surrounded by incredible musicians that they make my job super easy.
But Keep this in mind, I have in no way “made it” yet. There is still soo much work to be done, but I can say, if my “career” ends tomorrow for whatever reason, I will be happy that I even got a shot. I have to remind people that I am just a kid from Marietta, GA. There are probably over 5 million rappers in my state alone, and the fact that Big Boi believed in my band enough to sign us is an accomplishment in itself.
The advice I can give rappers out there is to just be humble. Realize that you aren’t the shit. I can’t tell you how many rappers hand me CD’s and talk themselves up “I’m a beast” “I’m the Shit” etc. and I hear the CD and I throw it out the window. They sound the exact same as every other rapper out there. More advice would be to record AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Find a way to record for free, damn near free and get to work. It took me years to even get people to pay attention to me, but in that time I was recording everyday and getting better on the daily.
Neil from Vonnegutt (my band) and I have this crazy ability to look outside of ourselves and approach our music from outside party and realize that we aren’t the shit. Haha. We realize the flaws in our music and are never overly confident.
Not saying you have to take this advice, but you know, just marinate it on it a minute. “Put that in your pipe and smoke it”. Haha I just wanted to say that.
But I hope reading this wasn’t just a complete waste of time. Remember, I am kinda faded at the moment, and I really just wanted to take this first blog and say to the average rapper. “If I can get a deal, you can too” straight up! There is nothing crazy I did. I just worked hard… Really… really fucking hard. And once you get past the point of making music to get cars, woman and money, and you just start making music because it hurts your soul not too… that’s when things start happening… or at least that’s what I did.
Until next time HHK followers,
I’m Out!
