I've been producing music for about six years. There's nothing more gratifying than stumbling upon a sik riff and milking it for everything it's worth... LOL!!! There are two general schools of thought that apply to techno; the idea that all listeners have A.D.D. and thus the songs should have quick changes and many of them. The other idea is that this form of music should have subtle changes and be constantly evolving. I tend to lean more to the latter of the two. In the beginning, the first school will be easier to listen to, but yields a song that feels more like two or three songs. The second school may be more difficult to listen to at first, but contains unity that is more satisfying to listen to when you want to get lost in the music. I've been spinning records and mixing for about two years. After seeing a Happy Hardcore mix set live back in '02, I've wanted to become a DJ, but I set out to become a producer before I began to DJ because I feel that it's crucial to carve one's own niche in sound. Producing has helped me gain an understanding for the music that I love in a way that nothing else could. Because of this I have a greater feeling of how to structure and create mixes than I would have if I hadn't learned where the valleys and peaks on those flat black disks really comes from. Currently, I use two Audio-Technica PL 120's, a Numark CD Mix-2, FL Studio XXL 7 (Don't underestimate this program... it IS dank!), Vegas Audio, Sound Forge, Plasma, and the Albino III.
