"A 21st century poet with deep running roots."
On 4/23/07, Philippa McMahon of ROOM THIRTEEN
<philippa.mcmahon@roomthirteen.com>
interviewed RETAIL:
Philippa:
Can you describe your sound/style for those who haven't checked you out yet?
RETAIL: Black & white psychedelica.
>
P:Do you play everything on the music you've recorded so far or have you worked with other people?
RETAIL: On the current demo it's all me: Piano & voice.
P:You've a very impressive list of influences on your Myspace profile, do any in particular stand out as having made a real impact in the way you write your music?
RETAIL: Bob Dylan & Sarah McLachlan.
P: What have been the best gigs you've been too?
RETAIL: Iggy Pop, the Ramones, Shelby Lynne, Alison Krauss & Union Station.
P: What have been your highlights from playing live yourself?
RETAIL: I don't wear highlights. I'm not a scene kid.
P: Have you had much interest from the UK and do you hope/plan to head over here to play live?
RETAIL: I would love to play the UK! Tell those record company wankers to call me!
P: Where does music fit in to the rest of what you do, acting and so on?
RETAIL: Sometimes a song requires a bit of acting. Even when it's autobiographical, the emotions fade over time. And as for the acting: It's like Johnny basing Capt. Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards. Since pop stars tend to be archetypal figures, they can be useful in building characters (not to be confused with "building character").
P: What do you hope to do/have lined up in the acting world over the next couple of years?
RETAIL: Since Daniel Craig snapped up the 007 gig, I don't what I'm going to do.
P: What are your favourite films?
RETAIL: James Bond of the sixties & seventies. Star Wars. Orson Welles. Fifties Hitchcock. My favorite movie is "The Red Balloon" (1956).

ONLINE REVIEW BY MARK E. WATERBURY: Atlanta's
Gilbert Kaneda (AKA retail) is a singer/songwriter that seems to take pages from Dylan, Jim Morrison and Buddy Holly to heart, and then run them through his soul to create a hybrid of thought provoking lyrics sung in a robust and heartfelt timbre that lends a modern folk vibe to
the music. The stripped down feel places you in
intimate company of Gilbert's psyche on this debut. A
twenty-first century poet with deep running roots.
