Name: Shannon Scott

Location: Vancouver, Canada

Shannon Scott is a vocalist, pianist and composer from Red Deer, AB. She graduated from Capilano College's Bachelor of Music program with a major in Jazz Voice and a minor in piano in 2006. Tapping her spectrum of influences, this songstress blends jazz harmony with the roots of a diverse musical past, and finds the character of folk meets funk, acoustic meets electric. Both her classical and jazz training supplement the compositions' nature that blurs the lines between genres, while the lyrics spin stories that are poetically heartfelt. Inspired by a variety of artists, she experiments liberally with expression of sound, and invariably connects with her audience as she performs with an honest and intimate presence. The Shannon Scott quintet, her original jazz project, also plays frequently around Greater Vancouver and combines original takes on standards with her own breed of jazz composition. Scott's natural ear for melody unifies her writing and improvisation, and drawing from songwriters and poets that range from Wayne Shorter to Joni Mitchell, her compositions are thoughtful, earnest, and imaginative. Scott also makes her mark as a lyricist, writing verse to arrangements of instrumental melodies of a variety of genres. With such a diverse musical background, Shannon has performed in New York's Carnegie Hall with Phil Mattson in 2001, was accepted to perform at the International Association of Jazz Educators conference in 2002 with Take Note, and sang with the acclaimed vocal jazz group Nitecap under the direction of Réjean Marois, performing with such internationally renowned artists as Ed Thigpen, Jimmy Heath, Jean-Michel Pilc, and Kate Hammet-Vaughan; continuing a branch of her career in that vocal jazz vein, she co-leads a band that performs in the style of the Andrews Sisters and Boswell Sisters called Company B who performs frequently around the Pacific North-West. She was also the recipient of the 2002 Dee Daniel's Jazz Vocalist's Scholarship Award, and is an active member of the music community with her career in music education, as well as collaborations and studio work with local artists such as CR Avery, RedSquare and Colleen Savage.
